Our Team

selfieHello and welcome, I am so excited you are here and interested in working together to build a therapeutic relationship based on mutual respect, trust, and authenticity. My name is Emily Johnson! I was born in Charlotte, North Carolina but my family and I moved to Jacksonville just shy of my 7th birthday. My husband and I recently moved back to Jacksonville with our two goldendoodle pups Paddy and Sirius, and hopefully will expand our family in the coming future where they can grow up in this wonderful family-oriented community. Jacksonville will always be my hometown and I am thrilled to call it my home again and pursue a path in helping others.

I am a Clinical Mental Health Counselor Intern and will complete my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in August 2023 at Wake Forest University. I have a Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science from Sewanee: The University of the South. I have worked previously for 5 years in college admissions at Wofford College, working with students and families from states all across the east coast. Working with students and families from all backgrounds guided me down the path to pursue my degree. Finding the right college can be an exciting time but also a challenging time and making a difference in these family’s lives helped lead me down the path to peruse helping people on a deeper level. My desire to become a therapist bloomed working with one family and having not the student come to me but the mother and say I made all the difference in not only her child’s life but her own. She had never felt so much trust and safety speaking about difficult aspects of her life than speaking with me. It was at Wofford I discovered a passion and drive to work with individuals, adults and adolescents, families, and couples. Life is a journey with many ups and downs. I aim to help you recognize and discover patterns of behaviors, thoughts, and feelings and actively work to resolve those that are not helpful or healthy so you can experience the healthiest and fulfilling life possible.

As we work toward your goals and address your concerns, we will tap on your inner strength and build on skills that serve to empower you.  As your therapist, I will support and guide but will follow your lead as you progress through the therapy. My theoretical approach is adapted to your needs, but I draw on theories and interventions from Person Centered Therapy, Family Systems, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic, Mindfulness and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. Human behavior is affected by both internal thoughts and beliefs, as well as external events, including influences of one’s family of origin and environment. When working with couples my theoretical approach is Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy which has shown to provide the highest rate of success. I view counseling as a vehicle for promoting holistic health including but not limited to cognitive, emotional, social, spiritual, and physical aspects of wellness.

I am qualified to counsel individual adolescents, adults, couples, families, and groups under the supervision of Dr. David Moenning, MS, LMFT (License #MT3081) from Restoration Counseling, and Dr. Donald Songy, PhD, LPC, NCC from Wake Forest University, both of which are appropriately credentialled supervisors. I am trained in a variety of theoretical approaches and counseling interventions.  Give me a call at 904-357-0382 to schedule an appointment. Sessions are $80 for a 50 minute appointment.
